Not a metaphor — an actual red reset button, roughly where you'd never look, that pops out when the motor overloads and cuts all power until it's pushed back in.
The disposal is fine. It has simply switched itself off to protect itself, and it will not respond to the wall switch until someone reaches underneath and resets it.
That's one of three checks that cost nothing and take about five minutes between them. Together they resolve a large proportion of what gets reported as a failed disposal.

No hum, no noise, nothing at all — this is where to start.
Reach underneath the disposal. There's a small button, usually red, on the bottom of the housing. If it has popped out, the internal overload protection has tripped.
Push it firmly back in. Then try the switch.
If it starts, the motor overloaded at some point — too much at once, something hard, or a jam that has since cleared — and it protected itself exactly as designed. Nothing is broken.
If it trips again immediately, something is still jamming it, which is check two.
The motor has power and the plate can't move. Almost always something wedged between the impellers and the grind ring.
Switch it off at the wall first. Not "be careful" — off.
Most units have a hex socket in the centre of the underside and come supplied with a matching wrench. Fit it and work the plate back and forth until it turns freely. If you don't have the wrench, the handle of a wooden spoon inserted from above and levered against an impeller does the same job.
Once it turns freely, reset the button underneath and try it again.
Common culprits: a bottle cap, a bone fragment, a fruit stone, cutlery, a twist tie, a bread bag clip, or a small piece of crockery from a chipped plate.
Check the breaker at the panel — some disposals sit on a dedicated circuit — and check whether the unit is plugged in, where it's a plug-in installation under the sink.
Where a disposal is fed via a switched outlet, that switch is also worth confirming.
None of that worked? Then it's a real fault, we'll arrive already knowing what it isn't, and the visit is shorter for it.
Jam. The motor is energised and the plate is stuck. Don't hold the switch on — that's how a jam becomes a burnt-out motor.
Tripped reset, tripped breaker, a switch fault, or a genuinely failed motor — in that order of likelihood.
Worn or blunted impellers, a worn grind ring, or persistent overloading with the wrong material.
Something hard in the chamber that shouldn't be there. Switch off and look before running it again.
That's a drain problem, not a disposal problem. The unit is doing its job and the waste has nowhere to go.
The mounting flange seal has failed. Common, repairable, and usually a reseat rather than a replacement.
The dishwasher connection or the discharge outlet — a hose, a clamp, or a gasket.
Different story. Water coming from the body of the unit means the internal seals have failed and water has been in the motor housing. That unit is at the end of its life.
Usually grease and fine debris coating the pipe beyond the unit, or the trap.
Frequently the knockout plug never removed at installation, or a blocked dishwasher connection.
Residue in the chamber and under the splash guard rather than a mechanical fault.
Water pooling in the sink with the unit grinding normally is a drain issue. Slow drainage in the second bowl, or in another fixture entirely, points past the disposal. Say that on the call and you may save yourself the wrong visit.
Garbage disposals sit differently from most fixtures — they're comparatively inexpensive units with a real service life, which shifts the arithmetic.
Disposal repair is genuinely limited compared with most plumbing. There are a handful of serviceable faults and beyond those, the cost of parts and labour approaches the cost of a new unit. What you should get is a straight answer about which side of that line you're on — not a repair attempt billed at replacement money.
Holding the switch while the motor strains is the single fastest way to destroy one. If it hums and doesn't turn, switch it off.
